Jennifer Hudson is set to make her Broadway debut this fall when the musical “The Color Purple” returns. The latest incarnation of the play (it ran 910 regular performances from 2005 through early 2008) will be produced, directed and designed by John Doyle, who received a director’s Tony in 2006 for his own Broadway debut “Sweeney Todd.”
Jennifer, who earned an Oscar for her role in the 2006 film “Dreamgirls”, is set to play Shug Avery. FYI, John recently opened his production of “The Color Purple” in 2013 in London at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
