It's Britney bitch! The reigning princess of pop, a title bestowed upon the singer back in the early 00s, has returned with the lead single from her upcoming, yet to be titled, eight studio album. "Work Bitch", a loud, feisty, sure-to-be club hit was rushed released a day early due to a low quality leak on Sunday. While Spears seems to be taking a new genre-pushing approach compared to the material found on her last full effort
Femme Fatale, the new single showcases no improvement when it comes to lyrical or vocal merit, but does shine in terms of production thanks to Black Eyed Peas front man turned annoying solo artist will.i.am. While dedicated, and sometimes delusional, Britney fans will surely send the track to the top of the charts, one can only wonder why?
"Work Bitch", rumored to be the lead single release weeks before its debut, was said to contain a sample of RuPaul's legendary "Supermodel (You Betta Work)", the supposed inspiration behind the dance tune from Miss Spears. While the sample is nowhere to be found on the finished product, *tear*, RuPaul is still present in spirit as the song will not sound out of place blasting on dance floors around the world. I could already imagine the dance moves and light shows set to the sickening beat. However, it's the beat that turns out to be the only interesting aspect of Spears' new release. The first listen of "Scream & Shout 2.0" was not the most pleasant experience.
"You wanna live fancy? Live in a big mansion? Party in France? You better work bitch!".... Seriously? Are these lyrics worthy of the princess of pop? Let alone any respectable musician on the charts today? They seem to be written for the likes of Rebecca Black in another Internet parody. I understand Spears has been fond of AutoTune since the epic
Blackout, and it has worked for her to a certain extent, but here the infamous piece of technology complete leeches any talent or charisma the singer still had left. It just feels as if the singer is going through the motions and steps planned out for her, never really taking the track to a different level. It's sort of boring pop music.
When compared to "Gimme More", "Womanizer" and "Hold It Against Me", "Work Bitch" must be Britney's worst lead single in a couple of years, although I will admit it's a step up from the dreadful "Ooh La La". Certain pieces of this tired release are worth commending, I do love how Spears pronounces "governor", but most of it fails to garner any impact, at least from me. I respect this pop queen, I'm hoping this single is not everything I should expect from album 8, I just think it is a missed opportunity. As a fan, this review was hard to post.
